Rwanda Hosts EAC Technical Committee Meeting on Harmonization of Waste Management Standards

From 14–18 September 2026, Rwanda, through the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), hosts a standards harmonization meeting of the East African Technical Committee on Waste Management (EASC/TC 31) 

Experts from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda participated physically, while Burundi and South Sudan joined virtually. The meeting focused on advancing the harmonization of regional standards to promote effective and environmentally sound waste management across the East African Community.

The key standards discussed include:

  • Environmental management of compost processing facilities
  • Solid Waste Management Collection Equipment — Requirements
  • Guidelines for the Disposal of Laboratory Chemicals and Samples
  • Criteria for Controlling Pollution of Marine Coastal Areas

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation and harmonized standards in supporting sustainable waste management and environmental protection across the East African Community.
