Rwanda won a silver medal at the 12th International Standards Olympiad – South Korea
International Standards Olympiad is a Competition organized by the Korean Agency for Science and Technology (KATS) in conjunction with Korean Standards Association (KAS) and takes place in South Korea each year. It is designed for young students from middle and high schools around the world to provide opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and to share new ideas about standards and technology. Rwanda has been participating since 2015 with good performance by winning Silver and Bronze medals in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
This year, the competition took place from 10th to 12th August, and Rwanda was represented by three brilliant students obtained through national competition organized by Rwanda Standards Board (RSB): KAMANDA Ange Pascal from Gashora Girls School, NTWALI Ivan Valery from Petit Seminaire de Rwesero and MUHIRE Beni from Nu-Vision High School.

Seven countries namely; Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Peru, Rwanda, Singapore and South Korea participated. Rwanda was the only country from Africa continent and managed to be awarded Silver Medal for High School Class among the four (4) categories of awards: Grand Prix, Gold, Silver and Bronze. The country had no team in middle school class. Grand prix as well as Gold prizes were won by South Korean Teams.

All teams (High School Class) were given same exercise of lighting a house of three (3) rooms with a simple technology in such a way the light intensity can be adapted to the room occupant’s needs. Materials were provided to them and they were required to come up with an innovative idea of how to use the provided materials and achieve results.
The highest price was Grand prix for Outstanding Team. All Teams both Middle and High School Class were eligible and criteria for winning Grand Prix were to come up with an innovative idea potential for future Standardization. It was won by Middle School Team from South Korea.

In all cases the evaluation criteria included simplicity of the design and affordability, Compatibility of design elements and practical demonstration of completed work, team spirit and good presentation showing areas that need to be standardized.
